Ingredients

Scale

For the Donut Dough:

  • 2 cups Bisquick mix

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • ½ cup whole milk

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg (optional, for classic flavor)

  • Extra Bisquick for dusting

For Frying:

  • 2 cups vegetable oil (or canola oil) for deep frying

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Optional Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 2 tbsp milk

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the Bisquick mix, granulated sugar, and nutmeg.
In a separate bowl, whisk the milk, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir just until a soft dough forms.
Dust your work surface with a little Bisquick and turn out the dough. Gently knead a few times to bring it together.

Step 2: Roll & Cut the Donuts
Roll the dough out to about ½-inch thickness.
Use a donut cutter to cut out donut shapes. Gather scraps and repeat until all dough is used.
If you don’t have a donut cutter, use a 3-inch round cutter or glass and a 1-inch cutter to remove the centers.

Step 3: Heat the Oil
Pour vegetable oil into a heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet to about 2 inches deep.
Heat over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (use a thermometer for best results).
Prepare a cooling rack with paper towels underneath for draining.

Step 4: Fry the Donuts
Carefully add 2–3 donuts at a time to the hot oil.
Fry for 1–2 minutes per side or until golden brown and puffed.
Use a slotted spoon or tongs to remove and place on the cooling rack. Repeat with all donuts and holes.

Step 5: Add Your Toppings
For cinnamon sugar: Mix granulated sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Brush warm donuts with melted butter, then roll in cinnamon sugar.
For glazed donuts: Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Dip slightly cooled donuts into the glaze and let set on a rack.
You can also try chocolate glaze or powdered sugar for variety!

Notes

Don’t Overmix – Stir just until combined to avoid tough donuts.
Keep Oil at the Right Temp – Use a thermometer and adjust heat as needed to stay around 350°F.
Work Quickly but Carefully – Donuts cook fast, so stay nearby and avoid overcrowding the pan.
Double the Batch – These disappear fast! Make extra for sharing or freezing.
