Ingredients
For the Cake:
-
2 cans (21 oz each) apple pie filling
-
1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
-
1 tsp ground cinnamon
-
1 tsp ground nutmeg (optional, for extra warmth)
-
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
-
½ tsp vanilla extract
For the Cinnamon-Sugar Topping:
-
2 tbsp granulated sugar
-
1 tsp ground cinnamon
Optional Add-Ins & Toppings:
-
½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
-
Drizzle of caramel sauce
-
Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
Step 2: Layer the Apple Filling
Spread the apple pie filling evenly over the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Sprinkle with vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg for extra flavor.
Step 3: Add the Cake Mix
Evenly sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix over the apple layer.
Do not stir—it’s important to keep the layers distinct for the classic dump cake texture.
Step 4: Add Butter
Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the entire surface of the cake mix.
Try to cover as much of the dry mix as possible to avoid dry patches.
Optional: Sprinkle nuts over the top for added crunch.
Step 5: Make the Cinnamon-Sugar Topping
In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon together.
Sprinkle evenly over the top of the cake to create that snickerdoodle finish.
Step 6: Bake the Cake
Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly around the edges.
Let cool for at least 10–15 minutes before serving so the filling can thicken slightly.
Step 7: Serve and Enjoy
Scoop into bowls and serve warm.
Top with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel if desired.
Notes
Don’t Stir – Keep layers intact for the best texture.
Even Butter Coverage – Ensures all of the cake mix bakes properly.
Use Quality Apple Filling – Choose a filling with big apple slices and rich flavor.
Customize It – Try adding raisins, chopped nuts, or swapping in a spice cake mix.
Let It Rest – A short cooling time helps the filling set for perfect serving.
